    The Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield is staging “It Came from a Book,” an art contest for teens. The contest welcomes original works of art inspired by a book. Teens may submit works in a variety of media, including photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and manga.

    A fall festival is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Oakland Presbyterian Church, 8927 Cleveland Road, Clayton. The festival will offer games, face painting, cakewalks, a pumpkin-carving contest, costume contests for children and adults, and hot dogs.
