Harvey Delafone Heartley, Sr. passed away peacefully on Monday, June 23, 2014. “Coach”, as he was affectionately known, was born on October 22, 1934 to the late Matthew and Lucille Heartley. He was raised in Clayton, NC with his two brothers Matthew (deceased) and Alfred where they were devoted members of First Baptist Church.
Upon graduation from Johnston County Training school in Smithfield, NC, Harvey attended North Carolina College in Durham, NC receiving a BS in Biology and a MS in Physical Education. Later he attended North Carolina State University where he received an ABD.
Coach started his professional coaching career at Cooper High School in Clayton, NC in 1956 transitioning to Ligon High School in Raleigh through 1968, winning tennis and basketball championships. Later in 1968, the late Governor Dan K. Moore appointed him as Youth Coordinator of Sports for the state of North Carolina. His passion for coaching led him to join Saint Augustine’s College “Mighty Falcons” where he faithfully served as associate professor, director of athletics, head men’s basketball, fencing, and golf coaches. Coach Heartley also served for many years as project administrator of the NCAA’s national youth summer program where he mentored to many young athletes. He invested over thirty years of his coaching career shaping and guiding the lives of staff, students and athletes, taking many athletes overseas to participate in international athletics. He was fondly referred to as the “Father of Falcon Athletics”. Recognizing his outstanding contribution to athletics, Coach Heartley was inducted into the CIAA, NCCU, and Saint Augustine College Basketball Hall of Fame, CIAA Coach of the Year, 4 times CIAA Athletic Director of the Year and NAIA District 26 Coach of the Year.
Among the many accolades and positions Harvey held in the community, he was a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Board of Directors of Meadowbrook Country Club, the Boys Club of Raleigh, Investron, YMCA of Garner Road, former President of Raleigh/Wake NCCU Alumni Association and a member of AARP Chapter 5032 of S.E. Raleigh, NC. In addition, he was the author of two books: A Book For All Families and the Oral History of the NC High School Athletic Conference.
He is survived by wife Maria; stepson, Gregory; three children, Delphyne, Harvey Jr. (Mary) and Shawn (Eddy); Anna G. Harkley, mother of his children; brother, Alfred (Beverly); four grandchildren, Antoine (Desne), Haley, Sydney, Natalie; one great-grandchild (Aniya); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday June 27 at First Baptist Church 101 S. Wilmington Street in Raleigh, NC. Viewing at 11:00 a.m., Program 12:00 p.m., and Service at 1:00 p.m.
