Helen Ruth Mitchell age 81 lost her battle with cancer in Clayton, NC on 31 May, 2014. Helen was born in Parke County, IN on October 20th, 1932, the second of seven children born to Raymond Bryan and Nora Wagle Pruner. After graduation from Fontanet High School in 1950 she was employed at Stewart’s Camera Shop and later at Packard Shirt in Terre Haute. Her work at these companies led to her lifelong loves of photography and sewing. She married Cpl. James F. Mitchell USMC in June of 1952 and they set up housekeeping in Miami, Florida. After discharge from the Service they returned to Indiana in late 1953. They lived in the rental house of Brownie and Ann Loden, then in Indianapolis, and later in Greenwood, IN before purchasing the property at RR #2 Rosedale, (now 1106 Denman Road) where they would remain until work took them to South Carolina in 1975. She was a member of Bridgeton Baptist Church and since moving south, a member of Trinity Baptist Church of Cayce, SC. She was renowned in and around Columbia, SC for her work as a seamstress, doll and puppet maker, and her work with the Trinity Benevolence committee. A stroke in 2008 made it impossible for her to continue those activities or tend her garden so she and Jim moved to an assisted living facility near their daughter in NC. She is survived by her husband James of Clayton, NC; son Clifton Vaughan (Gale) of Camarillo, CA; daughter Fonda Ann Baker (Shawn) of Clayton, NC; granddaughter Meredith Leigh Dotson of Rock Hill, SC; sister Hester L. Swickard (Jim) of Rosedale, IN; brother William R. Pruner of Carbon, IN; sister Evelyn A. Holler of rural Rosedale, IN; brother Wayne E. Pruner of Bridgeton, IN; and sister Elvena M. Pruett of Perrysville, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Stanley Thomas, a sister-in-law Judy Pruner (William R.), and two brothers-in-law Jimmy Dale Holler (Evelyn) and Seigel Pruett (Elvena M.)A memorial service will be conducted at Gabriel Manor in Clayton, NC Thursday June 5th at 7:30 PM. Pastor Rick Nieves will deliver the eulogy. Guests are welcome, cards and letters may be addressed in care of Jim Mitchell at the Gabriel Manor, 84 Johnson Estates Road, Clayton, NC 27520.
