Teenagers shine in 31st Annual Clayton Road Race

Runners break away from the starting line during the 31st annual Clayton Road Race. The course is considered one of the toughest each year among the Triangle-area 5K races.

Garner’s Amadeo Iraheta won the 31st annual Clayton Road Race recently, clocking in with a time of 18 minutes, 30 seconds in the 5K race. He finished 27 seconds ahead of the race runner-up, 15-year-old Austin Carroll of Clayton. Clayton 14-year-old Andre Hichue was third at 19:14.

John Musgrave ran fourth in his hometown race, the 47-year-old clocked in at 19:55. Cary’s John Hinson rounded out the overall top five.

Alicia Rider of Kernersville was the women’s division overall winner in 20:56. Clayton 13-year-old Callie Blandford was second (22:46) and 14-year-old Gwyn Reece of Smithfield was third (23:22).

Individual age group winners were: Wayne Faison of Garner (11-and-under males), Evie Shackles of Cary (11-and-under females), Amaya (12-19 males), Cara Martin of Clayton (12-19 females), Damarius Hayes of Raleigh (20-29 males), Velaire Elliott of Holly Springs (20-29 females), Hinson (30-39 males), Carolyn Palmeri of Cary (30-39 females), Musgrave (40-49 males), Malin Barton of Clayton (40-49 females), Rodney Gilmore of Smithfield (50-99 males) and Lisa Himmelberger of Clayton (50-99 females).

Stephen and Paula Corey of Garner finished 1-2 in the walkers division. Stephen Corey timed at 46:25 and Paul Corey was at 46:26.

Susan Bradley (58) was the oldest female competitor and 71-year-old John Wrenn was the oldest male competitor.
