Deed copy doesn’t cost $83
My office has received several inquiries about a company identified as Record Transfer Services. The company, located in South Dakota, offers to get the homeowner a “property profile” and copy of their deed for $83.
According to the N.C. Attorney General’s Office, the official-looking letter is not what it claims to be. If you just glanced at a letter received recently by some North Carolinians, you’d assume it was sent by the government. It says the Local Records Office can provide a copy of your deed – “the only document that identifies you as a property owner” – for $83. To spur you to act quickly, it also includes a “Please Respond By” date.
Back in 2012, a company with a Raleigh address sent out a similar letter.
To Johnston County property owners, your deed is kept on file here in the Johnston Register of Deeds Office. You can usually find your deed online and print it for free, and even if you need a certified copy it will only cost you a few dollars. I will continue to safeguard the records here in the office.
