Comets sweep West Johnston in tennis
Clayton continued its unbeaten season in boys tennis with matching wins over West Johnston and a win over Southeast Raleigh last week. The Comets are 12-0 overall and 11-0 in the Greater Neuse River 4A Conference.
The Comets beat West by an 8-1 count on April 1, then downed Southeast by the same score on April 9. West took two matches from Clayton in a 7-2 Comet triumph on April 3.
Klein Evans, Naren Guha, Brooks Campbell, Ian Bliss and Duncan Hales won for Clayton in singles in that match. West’s John Simon was a 7-5, 6-0 winner over Vance Lanier at No. 5 singles.
Clayton’s Evans and Guha won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles over Marcus Juarez and Ryne Turner. Campbell and Bliss were also 8-1 winners at No. 2 doubles, downing Robert Manion and John Simon. The Wildcats won at No. 3 doubles.
Pirates’ offense shines against SSS
Corinth Holders topped Smithfield-Selma 10-2 in softball Friday night, jumping out to the lead early with a four-run third inning. The Pirates piled up 19 hits on the night.
Kelsie Hocutt doubled three times and drove in three runs for Corinth Holders. The Pirates’ Holly Price went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a double, while McKenzie Latham was 3-for-4 and Brandy Davis was 3-for-5.
Kayla Narron struck out 12 Spartan batters in the victory and allowed four hits. The Spartans scored their two runs in the fifth inning to cut the Pirate lead to 7-2.
