Sands, Archer shining so far in Florida
Wilson’s Mills native Jerry Sands is off to a blazing start with the Tampa Bay Rays in spring training in Port Charlotte, Fla. Sands was hitting .429 through 13 games and 21 at bats.
He has seven extra-base hits, including three home runs. His OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging) is a whopping 1.526.
Sands, a off-season pickup from the Pittsburgh Pirates’ organization, is vying for a roster spot as the fifth outfielder in Tampa. He’s in a very competitive battle for that roster spot with Jeremy Moore, who also has three home runs this spring.
Clayton’s Chris Archer hasn’t allowed a run yet through his first two spring training starts for the Tampa Bay Rays. The right-hander has thrown 5 1/3 innings in two starts with three hits allowed, no walks and three strikeouts.
His walks and hits per innings pitched is a very solid 0.56.
Rams down Comets in softball
Cleveland downed Clayton 5-1 in softball Friday afternoon behind Brittany Bucklin's two home runs. Taylor Drayton held the Comets to one run to earn the pitching victory.
