Clayton girls hold off Garner

Clayton knocked down enough 3-pointers to hold off rival Garner for a 53-48 girls basketball victory Monday night. The Comets held a 20-point lead in the third quarter but the Trojans cut the lead to 51-48 with 52 seconds to play on a 3-pointer by Kelsey Bryan.

Garner then forced a five-second violation on Clayton’s next possession and got two looks at 3-pointers down only three points but couldn’t knock either shot down.

Tanisha Murphy of Clayton rolled up 31 points on the night, while Ashley Murphy and Jenna Harris added eight each for the Comets.

Spartans upset Cleveland girls

Smithfield-Selma’s girls hit just enough free throws in the final seconds to hold off Cleveland for a 48-46 basketball win Monday night. The loss was only Cleveland's second in Two Rivers 3A Conference play.

Miranda Hinton and Brittany Preston had 11 points each for Cleveland in the loss, while Myrayna Watkins chipped in 10.

“We missed free throws and we just didn’t finish when we had some opportunities inside,” Cleveland coach Chris Danehower said. “It’s just one of those games, a tough game. We’re just trying to finish our season strong.”
