Athletic ability is no qualification for college

In your opinion page on Jan. 19, you made several points with which I agree, particularly the suggestion that high schools are partly to blame for college students not being able to read at an eighth-grade level.

But I take exception when you speak of “the alternatives to college for athletes who struggle in the classroom.” I am sure these athletes had several classmates who struggled as they did, and I am sure some of them did end up with a menial job or on the street corner. The only difference is they did not have the athletic ability of the one who went on to college.

There are many who agree that a certain level of athletic ability is a qualification for college entrance. I hope you do not count yourself among them.
