The Clayton Newcomers and Neighbors Club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at the Clayton Woman’s Club building, 109 Church St. Judy Hoffman will speak on “How to Deal Effectively With Angry People.”

The second annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Zaxby’s, 12857 U.S. 70 Business West, Clayton. The restaurant invites individuals and teams to seek pledges and then take a dip in a pool that Zaxby's will set up in its parking lot. To learn more, visit

The Clayton Center for Active Aging is offering an Gingham embroidery class at 1 p.m. Thursdays at 303 Dairy Road, Clayton. The class is free to adults 60 and older. For more information, call 919-553-4350.

The Clayton Center for Active Aging and the Clayton Parks and Recreation Department are joining forces to offer three classes in the new year for adults 60 and older.

A class in watercolor and acrylic painting will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays. The cost is $5; students must purchase their own supplies.

Jewelry making will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesdays. The cost is $9.

A class in computer basics will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

A pancake breakfast is scheduled from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Applebee’s, 5158 N.C. 42 West in the Cleveland community. The cost is $7 per plate, with proceeds going to the Clayton High School Performing Arts Booster Club. To purchase advance tickets, call 919-760-7197. Also, tickets will be available at the door.

Johnston County

The Ruby Tuesday restaurants in Smithfield and the Cleveland community are taking part in a fundraiser for Johnston Community College. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, when diners present a GiveBack flyer to their server, the restaurant will donate 20 percent of the meal cost to JCC. Fliers are available at the information desk and in the JCC Foundation office on the Smithfield campus, 245 College Road. Also, the flyer can be printed at The Smithfield restaurant is at 119 Industrial Park Drive. The Cleveland community restaurant is at 65 Son-Lan Parkway.

The Johnston County Beekeeper’s Association will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at the Johnston County Agricultural Center, 2736 N.C. 210, Smithfield. The program will include training and certification in EpiPen use. Also, Rick Coor will provide an update from the N.C. State Beekeeper’s Association. The Johnston association will raffle a complete hive.

The Johnston Soil and Water Conservation District is taking tree-seedling orders through Wednesday, Feb. 12. Available are loblolly pine, crepe myrtle, Eastern red cedar, Eastern redbud, black walnut and willow oak. The pines are $10 per bundle of 25; all other trees are $10 per bundle of 10. Johnston Health has put together an information session with presentations from a social worker, an infection preventionist and a home-care nurse. The sessions are designed to help those who are taking care of loved ones at home.

The session will take place on the following dates: Jan. 21 at Benson United Methodist Church, 205 E. Church St., Benson; Jan. 23 in the Johnston Medical Mall on North Bright Leaf Boulevard, Smithfield; and Jan. 30 at Princeton Church of God, 6085 U.S. 70, Princeton. All sessions will begin at 6 p.m. Admission is free.


The Selma Parks and Recreation Department invites adults 55 and older to travel to Greensboro’s Barn Dinner Theater on March 14 for a performance of “Church Basement Ladies: A Second Helping.” The cost is $75 and includes transportation, dinner and the performance. While at the SRAC, children will do crafts, decorate cookies and watch a movie, giving their parents a chance to spend Valentine’s Day together. The cost is $15 per child. A Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at St. Peter’s Church of Christ, 1011 Massey St., Smithfield. Haywood T. Gray will speak. He is executive secretary and treasurer of the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. The Johnston Community College arboretum will offer the following workshop this month:
