The N.C. High School Athletic Association will conduct three state championship events for indoor track and field in February for the first time, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times. The 3A will hold its own separate championships, like the 4A ranks, while competitors in the 1A and 2A ranks will remain in a combined meet. The state championships will be Feb. 7-8 at the JDL Indoor Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
Qualifying standards have not been set for each championship and neither have the schedule of which meet will be held on Friday (Feb. 7) and which two meets will be held Saturday (Feb. 8).
Banks playing in CFL: Garners Brandon Banks a former Washington Redskin is playing with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League. The 5-foot-7, 153-pound kick returner and receiver has caught nine passes covering 95 yards this season and has six rushes for 60 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown run.Banks, who played at Kansas State University, has a total of 31 kick returns (punt and kick offs combined). His longest kick return covered 42 yards.
The Tiger-Cats opened the Grey Cup Playoffs Saturday against Montreal Saturday night.
Herrera is conference player of the week: Former South Johnston High star Edgar Herrera, a senior at Saint Leo University in Florida, was named the Sunshine State Conference offensive player of the week for Nov. 4, after scoring the game-winning overtime goal against Rollins to clinch the SSC soccer regular-season championship. Herrera, who was a standout soccer player and the kicker on Souths 2009 3AA state finalist football team, also assisted on the Lions only goal in a 1-0 win over Eckerd earlier in the week.
Herrera is the second member of his family to score a championship-clinching goal for Saint Leo. His older brother Eusebio Montoya, who played at Smithfield-Selma, scored the goal that gave the Lions their first conference championship in school history as a freshman.
Herrera has eight assists and three goals this season.
Hines watch: Nyheim Hines of Garner has moved to No.
Hines, a junior, has run for 38 touchdowns this season. Former Albemarle standout T.A. McLendon holds the state record with 68 rushing scores and Kevin Parks of West Rowan is second with 59. Elijah Hood of Charlotte Catholic is third (48) and Anthony Barbour of Garner (47) is fourth.
McLendon also leads in single-season touchdowns with 71. Hines is fifth, and needs one score to move into third. He has 48 touchdowns this season 38 rushing, eight receiving and two kick returns.
Hines also has two a pair of touchdown passes.
Impressive debut for Baker: North Johnston senior Jenna Baker had a very productive first year in golf. The Panthers standout qualified for the 1A/2A NCHSAA state championships in her first season of play. Baker had a tournament best score of 111 in the second round at Longleaf Golf and Country Club last month.
