Comets sweep Cape Fear
Clayton rolled into the second round of the 4A dual team playoffs with a 9-0 sweep of Fayetteville Cape Fear on Oct. 15.
The Comets (18-0) didn’t drop a set in singles play. In fact, no singles player for Clayton lost more than three games a match. Carmelle Joyner, Elezcia Singletary, Logan Boykin, Katherine Riley, Maya Guha and Spencer Rich all won in singles.
Cleveland freshman wins Two Rivers title
Cleveland freshman Victoria Dixon won the rain-plagued Two Rivers 3A Conference individual championships singles title on Oct. 16, downing Triton’s Jennifer Byrd, 6-0, 6-1, in the championship match. The tournament was delayed multiple times because of rain and wet court conditions.
Dixon moved into the finals with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Triton’s Lydia Jones. Byrd defeated Cleveland’s Amber Reese, 6-1, 6-2, in the other semi.
Cleveland’s doubles team of Casey Queil and Christina Holbrook finished second in the conference, dropping the championship match to Triton’s Caroline Dunham and Madison Newton, 6-2, 6-2. Dunham and Newton took a two-set win over South Johnston’s Nicole Autry and Hannah Johnson in the doubles semifinals.
Dixon also advanced to the 3A state individual singles championship on Saturday, finishing third in the regional. She will play for a state championship beginning Friday.
She was the only area player to advance to the state championship round of 16.
Individuals and doubles teams from Garner , Clayton, Cleveland, South Johnston and North Johnston made it to the regional round.
Ledford eliminates Cleveland
Thomasville Ledford downed Cleveland 6-3 in the 3A dual team playoffs, ending the Rams’ season with a 11-5 mark.
