Pet vaccinations

Tractor Supply Co. is bringing pet vaccinations to its store on South Pollock Street in Selma.

A company called PawsPlus will operate Tractor Supply’s PetVet Clinic, which will offer vaccine packages for rabies, Bordetella and parvo. For information about clinic dates and times, call the Selma store at 919-965-6762 or visit www.petvet.pawsplus.com.

Safety award winner

Atlantic Coast Protein Corp. in Selma has received a SHARP Award from the N.C. Department of Labor. The company, located on Noble Street, has had 4,000 workdays without an accident.

N.C. Commissioner of Labor Cherie Berry presented the award during a ceremony at the plant. Company owner Aage Lauridsen was among those on hand.

The Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program, or SHARP, recognizes small- and mid-sized businesses that establish and maintain effective safety and health programs.

APC is the world’s largest producer of functional proteins. Its customers include livestock producers, feed manufacturers and pet-food companies. APC derives its proteins from components found in bovine and porcine blood. Its products are consumed by millions of animals around the globe. The company’s world headquarters is in Ankeny, Iowa.

APC has 11 full-time employees in Selma, where it has operated since 1993. Matt Ruppert is the plant manager, and Tony Lester is the plant superintendent.

How to Sell Without Selling for the Small Business Owner – 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 23, in Room 1032 of the Workforce Development Center. Learn how to sell ethically by drawing your perfect prospect.

SBA 8a and HUBZone Socio-Economic Programs – 1-4 p.m. Oct. 31, in Room 1032 of the Workforce Development Center. Learn how to enroll in the SBA, SBA 8a and HUBZone programs for businesses owned by minorities, women, disabled veterans and the economically disadvantaged. The seminar is geared for businesses that have been open for at least one year and can provide contracted services to the U.S. government.

Expo seeks vendors

The Smithfield-Selma Chamber of Commerce is seeking vendors for its 2013 BB&T Business Expo, which will take place Wednesday, Oct. 30, at the Johnston County Agricultural Center. The annual business trade show draws more than 40 exhibitors and nearly 1,000 attendees.

This year’s expo will offer two distinct marketing opportunities. Business-to-Business will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Community marketing will be from 4-7 p.m. The latter will also be time for the community to bring children for trick-or-treating.

Eye opener at Belk

The Smithfield-Selma Chamber of Commerce will hold its next Women’s Eye Opener on Tuesday, Oct. 22. The social is scheduled from 9-10 a.m. at Belk, 1231 N. Bright Leaf Blvd., Smithfield. The chamber will serve a light breakfast. To attend, email sherry@reachoutjoco.org no later than Friday, Oct. 18.

MS Word Columns, Tables and Merges – 9 a.m.-noon Nov. 6 in Room 1033 of the Workforce Development Center. Learn to master columns, tables and mail merges in Microsoft Word. The cost is $71.

MS Excel Calculations – 9 a.m.-noon Nov. 20 in Room 1033 of the Workforce Development Center. Learn to use common business calculations and troubleshoot results. The cost is $71.

Foundations in Entrepreneurship – 9 a.m.-noon Tuesdays, Oct. 22-Dec. 16, in Room 1033 of the Workforce Development Center. The course is designed for people who want to start a small business. Students will develop a business plan and learn basic planning principles. The course includes weekly face-to-face meetings from 9 a.m. to noon, plus online courses. Internet access and a reliable computer are required. The cost is $125.

Notary Public – The class is required for anyone wishing to apply through the N.C. Secretary of State’s Office to be commissioned. Students must be 18 or older and have a GED or high school diploma. The cost is $98. The following session will be held at the Cleveland Center: 6-9 p.m. Nov. 18-19. The following sessions will take place at the Workforce Development Center: 6-9 p.m. Oct. 21-22; 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8; and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6.
