Smithfield does have respite care
I am writing in response to the Sept. 3 letter to the editor about respite services needed in Johnston County.
On Feb. 24 of this year, the Smithfield Herald carried a front page story about Divine Destiny, Johnston Countys first and only state-certified, nonprofit adult-care provider, located at 612 Powell St. in Smithfield. The story noted that Divine Destiny, which had opened the year before, needed funding to keep its doors open.
The Herald then ran an article a few months back stating that local residents had to take their loved ones out of county for any kind of respite services because there were none closer. Again, we are still open and operating. That article went on to say that the good ladies of First Baptist Church in Smithfield will provide a few hours two days a week for caregiver respite and that St. Joseph of the Pines, another respite provider, had received a large grant to remake the old Heilig-Meyers building into a day care center for adults.
Divine Destiny is open five days a week, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., providing services to caregivers, including monthly group sessions and care for any adult with physical and/or cognitive impairments including dementia and Alzheimers. We provide hot meals, medical care and activities geared toward each participants abilities, and we do all of this for $55 a day.
We can and do accept nonverbal participants and participants who require personal assistance. This is why Divine Destiny wanted and received state certification, so we are prepared right now to accept most participants. All staff members at Divine Destiny are certified in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and we have a certified nursing assistant and registered nurse on staff.
It would be a breath of fresh air to see this in print so residents of Smithfield and the surrounding areas know they do have a choice and that there is a place that will provide their loved ones with activities and care from a professional, highly-trained and very caring staff.
