CLAYTON — Police are trying to find the thief or thieves who stole items from nine cars on the same night in Brittany Woods and Grovewood subdivisions.
The thefts, which took place late on Aug. 20 and early on Aug. 21, all had one thing in common: All of the vehicles were unlocked.
Three of the thefts were in the 2700 block of Brigadoon Drive; two were on Grovewood Drive. The others were on McKinnon Drive, Brittany Drive, Woodbriar Street and Bennington Drive.
The thief or thieves targeted electronics, taking laptops computers, GPS devices, cameras and satellite radios.
Richard Kross of Brigadoon Drive lost a GPS device and an XM radio unit, but he wasnt too bothered. The jokes on them because theyre both old and havent been updated, he said of the pilfered devices.
Krosss suspicion is that teens are behind the thefts. They also stole some CDs from my wifes car, and they left the cases scattered in the yard across the street, including a Celine Dion case, he said.
Kross has lived in Brittany Woods for about a year now, and this is his first brush with crime. But from talking to neighbors, this isnt the first time thieves had preyed on cars in the subdivision.
Town spokeswoman Stacy Beard confirmed that the two subdivisions have been hit before, both cars and homes. She said police will be talking with the victims and interviewing neighbors in search of leads and suspects.
After the thefts, police officer Andy Jernigan, who is on the departments Community Action Team, sent out an email to Neighborhood Watch leaders in Clayton. He asked them to report anything suspicious and to tell residents to write down the serial numbers, makes and models of things of value.
If we have that information, the chance of recovery is greater, Jernigan said in the email.
Clayton police urge all residents to lock their cars and remove anything of value from them.
Police are asking anyone who saw anything the night of Aug, 20 or the morning of Aug. 21 to call the police department at 919-553-4611 or Clayton Crime Stoppers at 919-359-8479
