CLAYTON — The town council last week reviewed a proposed fee schedule for use of East Clayton Community Park on Glen Laurel Road.
In short, the proposed fees there are higher there than at other Clayton parks because East Clayton offers regulation-size fields, one each for baseball and soccer, said Larry Bailey, director of the Clayton Parks and Recreation Department.
“We’re going to be having adult soccer leagues, which is new for us,” Bailey said. “That’s something that has been a goal of ours – to add more adult programming.”
“They are dedicated for specific sport use, and they are game fields primarily, so they won’t do a lot of practicing out there,” Bailey added
The proposed East Clayton Community Park baseball fee is $25 per hour for residents and $40 per hour for nonresidents. The soccer field is $25 per hour and $65 for nonresidents. The fee for the multipurpose field is $30 per hour for residents and $45 for nonresidents.
The other sports fields in town are $15 per hour for residents and $30 per hour for nonresidents.
To use lights at Clayton Community Park, Municipal Park and Legend Park, the fee is $15 per hour. On the soccer and baseball fields at East Clayton Community Park, lights are $20 per hour.
Councilman Michael Grannis asked if the new fields could make Clayton competitive regionally as a tournament host.
Jimmy Bradley, supervisor of athletics for parks and recreation, said East Clayton won’t draw large-scale tournaments. “With one (field each) out there, we’re not gonna draw huge tournaments,” Bradley said. “I think we can find six- to eight-team tournaments.”
Along with the East Clayton fees, the Parks and Recreation Department proposed raising the fee for adult soccer teams from $300 to $350. The individual fee for nonresidents would increase from $30 to $40 per player. Bradley said often teams will find a sponsor to pay their team fee.
The council will study the proposed fees and vote on them at its next meeting.
East Clayton Community Park, completed in May, includes a picnic shelter, disc golf course, walking trails, a playground and sports fields.
