CLAYTON — Inclement weather claimed the day, forcing the cancellation of the Clayton Little League’s 7-8 coach-pitch league championship game at Riverwood Middle School.
A sudden storm in the bottom of the first innings washed away the hopes of the Astros and Angels of completing the contest, when the field quickly became saturated with water, making it unplayable.
The Civitan had been trying for 10 days to get the game in, but Mother Nature stepped in on each attempt forcing several postponements.
The Astros were named the league champion, based on their regular season championship. The Angels were the regular-season runner-up.
“We would have like to have played that game,” said Astros coach Steve Crute, whose team was leading 4-0 with runners on first and second with one out when lightning flashed, thunder boomed and the heavens opened.
“It would have been nice, but then again, they (Angels) did not have all their players tonight, and we were missing one as well.”
