CLAYTON — A resident has asked the Town Council to adopt an ordinance that would require pet owners to leash their cats.
Last week, Scott Hanson of Hillcrest Circle showed council members some photos that struck town leaders as both amusing and horrifying.
Some photos were of Hanson being mauled by his own cat. Others showed cat hair on his boat and damage to his car caused by his cat. Hanson said he wanted to show councilmen the harm cats can cause.
“All the time I have to wake up to the smell of cat urine from cats in my neighborhood,” he said.
Hanson said photos of what his cat had done were proof of what other cats are capable of – and reason for the town council to require cats to be on leashes when they’re outside.
The council agreed with Hanson that cats can cause harm, but they acknowledged the controversy they’d spur if they tried to treat cats like dogs.
Councilman Bob Satterfield said a leash law was a good idea, but he said any such proposal would fill the council chambers with protesters.
