Recruit completes boot camp
Army National Guard Pvt. Tyler C. Caldwell has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, Caldwell received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, combat skills, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid and Army history, values and traditions.
Caldwell is the son of Carl Caldwell Jr. of Clayton and Laura Smith of Angier. His stepmother is Dorothy Caldwell of Clayton.
Caldwell is a 2012 graduate of Fuquay-Varina High School.
Martial arts students take honors
Students of Parkers Self-Defense Studios in Clayton won honors at the National Black Belt League’s Grand Slam Nationals. The Clayton winners are listed below by category:
Traditional weapons – Richard Rayburn, second place; and Angela Rayburn, third place.
Youth self-defense – Thomas White, first place.
Weapon – Thomas White, first place; Bailey Bosslow, first place; Patrick Heavey, second place; Regan Heavey, third place. Gavin Johannes, Frederick Johannes, Connor O’Brien and Darryl Milligan also received honors.
Empty hand form – Thomas White, second place; Patrick Heavey, second place; Regan Heavey, third place; and Bailey Bosslow, third place. Gavin Johannes, Darryl Milligan and Frederick Johannes also received honors.
Contemporary weapons – Richard Rayburn, first place; and Bailey Bosslow, second place.
6 and under division – Bryson Hinton, first place.
Sparring – Shane Richardson, Connor O’Brien and Gavin Johannes received honors.
Students graduate from seminary
Clarksville Theological Seminary in Clayton held its spring commencement April 18 at Fellowship Baptist Church. This year’s graduates are Martin Luther Walters Jr. of Wake Forest, honorary doctor of divinity; Jesse Earl Rhodes Jr. of Selma, master’s degree in religious education; Barbara Royal Davis of Garner, master’s degree in religious education; Gary Lee Murrell of Spring Hope, doctor of theology; Christopher Napoleon Cobb of Burgaw, bachelor’s degree in theology; and Gary Mark Reichenbacker of Florida, master’s degree in theology.
Army trains Quentin Trent Jr.
Army Pvt. Quentin P. Trent Jr. has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. He is the son of Yoneka and Phillip Trent of Champion Street in Clayton.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, rifle marksmanship, bayonet combat, chemical warfare, field training and tactical exercises.
Trent is a 2012 graduate of Clayton High School.
Jacob Hansen enlists in Navy
Jacob D. Hansen, the son of Sherrie D. Hansen and David E. Hansen of Clayton, has enlisted in the U.S. Navy under the Delayed Entry Program.
The program allows recruits to enter the Navy and take up to one year to complete prior commitments such as high school. Using recruiters as mentors, the program helps recruits ease into the transition from civilian to military life.
Hansen is a 2010 graduate of Clayton High School.
Air Force trains Matthew Gallant
Air Force Airman Matthew T. Gallant has graduated with honors from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio. He is the son of John Gallant of Ridge Drive of Clayton.
The eight-week program included training in military discipline and studies, the Air Force’s core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate’s degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Gallant is a 2010 graduate of Raleigh Charter High School.
Jacob Paszak enlists in Navy
Jacob W. Paszak has enlisted in the U.S. Navy under the Delayed Entry Program. He will graduate this year from Corinth Holders High School.

Young breeders to attend show
The following young breeders will exhibit Angus cattle at the 2013 Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show June 21-23 in Harrisonburg, Va.: Travis Ray Creech, Justin Wood, Mary Elaine Wood and Riley Wood, all of Willow Spring.
