Bond throws no-hitter for Comets

Clayton senior Nicole Bond threw a no-hitter as the Comets downed Harnett Central in softball, 11-0, on Tuesday night. Bond and Mindy North were also 2-for-3 at the plate for the Comets.

Comets finish second in golf: West Johnston won its second straight Greater Neuse River 4A Conference boys’ golf match Tuesday at River Ridge. The Wildcats finished at 337, six shots ahead of Clayton, during the league’s first 18-hole match of the season.

David Chavis posted a five-over-par, 77, to lead West Johnston and collect medalist honors. Teammate Scott Freeman shot 83, while Brice Connors added an 86.

Matt King paced Clayton with an 80 and Taylor Doering shot 84. Harnett Central was third at 345, while Garner shot 360 for fourth.

Michael Otteson (83) and Matteo Ceyrolles (84) led Garner on the afternoon.

Smithfield-Selma finished sixth in the match and was paced in scoring by Jonathan Jarman.
