West Johnston boys win GNRC match No. 2

Published: March 9, 2013

— West Johnston survived the rain to win the second Greater Neuse River 4A Conference boys’ golf match of the season Tuesday at Wil-Mar Golf Club.

West’s David Chavis was the medalist with a low round of 37 as the Wildcats won Tuesday’s nine-hole round during steady rains at Wil-Mar Golf Club. Chavis’ teammate, Scott Freeman, and Central’s Brendon Johnson tied for second, each shooting 38.

The sum of each team’s four lowest rounds determines team scoring in a match.

West Johnston finished with a team total of 159 to edge Harnett Central, which posted a 168 Tuesday. The two teams were trailed by Clayton (169), Garner (173), Knightdale (178), Smithfield-Selma (202), East Wake (210) and Southeast Raleigh (225).

The only other round lower than 40 was a 39 carded by Clayton’s Lee Smith, who improved from a round of 46 in the first match of the season at Wendell Country Club.

Garner’s Kyle Gilman finished with a 41, while teammates Michael Otteson and Matteo Ceyrolles both shot 42.

Miles Fleming and Jonathan Fleming both shot 49s for Smithfield-Selma. Jack Olson led Southeast Raleigh with a 48.

The teams earn points in the season standings based on their finish in each match.

West Johnston (13.5 season points) gained a point on league-leading Harnett Central (15) on Tuesday. Fourth-place Clayton (11.5) also gained a point on third-place Garner (12) in the match.

The teams rounding out the bottom four finished in the same order in each of the first two matches of the season. Knightdale is in fifth place with eight points, followed by Smithfield Selma with six, East Wake with four and Southeast Raleigh with two.

Southeast Raleigh will host the next match of the season, Tuesday at River Ridge Golf Club.
