Cleveland wrestler takes third

— Cleveland’s Dakota Hill won four straight consolation bracket matches to charge back for a third place finish at the NCHSAA 3A individual wrestling championships Saturday in Greensboro. Hill took third in the state at 138 pounds, going 51-7 on the season.

The Rams had two wrestlers tie for seventh in the state in their respective weight classes: Jhavonte Moone at 145 and Chanse Wallace at 170. Teammate Blaine Bryant tied for ninth in the state at 182.

Darius Dunn of Corinth Holders placed fourth in the 2A state wrestling championships. Dunn wrestled at 106 pounds, falling to eventual state champion Mitchel Langford of North Henderson in the championship semifinals.

Dunn, who became the Pirates’ first regional champion in school history last week, finished the season with a 58-5 record after taking a pinfall loss to Alphonso Martin in the consolation finals. Dunn defeated Michael Lowe in the consolation semifinals.

Teammate Elijah Harris was sixth in the state at 220, suffering a tough 1-0 loss to Hampstead Topsail’s Joseph Sculthorpe in the championship semifinals, then falling by a point (2-1) to Zac Whisnant in the consolation semis and to Trey Eason (6-5 in overtime) in the fifth place match.

Harris completed his season with a 51-10 mark.

Cleveland’s Derrick Applewhite finished tied for 13th in the state in the 3A tournament, taking an upset loss in the first round. He finished the year 40-13.

Dustin Brennan went 1-2 in the 113-pound 2A division. He finished the season 53-9. Brennan’s win came in a consolation first round match, an 8-4 decision against Clifford Braly of North Henderson.

Corinth Holders’ Cameron Brewer made the state tournament at 126 pounds but bowed out with consecutive losses, finishing the season with a 46-14 record.
