Michaela Carter of Corinth Holders finished as the state runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle during the 1A/2A state swimming and diving championships on Saturday in Cary.
Carter posted a season’s best time of 53.28 seconds in the event. She also finished fourth in the 50 freestyle at 24.78 seconds.
Her finishes helped the Pirates to a seventh place team finish in the state. Corinth Holders’ boys were 10th in the state meet.
Corinth Holders’ girls relay teams in the 200 medley and the 400 freestyle also finished in the top eight in the state. Lauren Bunting, Amanda Knickerbocker, Stephanie Grandin and Michaela Carter were seventh in the 400 free at 3:58.25. The same quartet was eight in the 200 medley at 2:00.79.
Grandin finished eight in the 100 breaststroke in 1:14, while Grandin took 11th in the individual medley (2:23.99). Knickerbocker was 21st in the backstroke preliminary round (1:08.62).
Nolan Hopkins had two top 10 individual finishes for the Pirates and swam on a pair of relay teams that both finished 10th.
Hopkins placed fourth in the 500 free (4:59.45) and was ninth in the butterfly (55.55). He joined with Connor Blandford, Chris Carter and Cody Beamer to finished 10th in the medley relay at 1:48.08. Neal Quinn, Beamer, Blandford and Hopkins were 10th in the 400 free relay at 3:32.79.
Blandford was a part of three top 10 finishes in the state. In addition to the two relay swims, he took ninth in the backstroke (55.48). Beamer and Elliot Hunt were 20th and 21st for Corinth Holders, respectively. in the breaststroke prelims.
Hunt was also 21st in the backstroke and the 200 free. Eric Svadeba finished 24th in the 200 free.
The Pirates’ 200 free relay grouping of Bryce Sherrill, Brach Gordon, Dalton Beamer and Bailey Blackwell finished 11th in the state at 1:36.11.
4A State Swimming Championships: Clayton freshman standout Dominique Quintero swam a 54.37 in the girls 100-yard freestyle finals to take 13th place in the state 4A championships on Thursday. Quintero was also 16th in the 50 free.
3A State Swimming Championships: Cleveland’s March Petzinger finished 23rd in the 100-yard freestyle girls 3A state championship preliminary round on Friday at the Triangle Aquatics Center. She posted a time of 1:00.61. Petzinger was the only area participant in the state 3A meet.
