Prep Roundup: Clayton boys pull away from Harnett Central

Clayton pulled away from Harnett Central in the second quarter and grabbed a 67-46 Greater Neuse River 4A Conference win on Tuesday night. Anthony Gaskins led the Comets with 25 points, while Gary Clark added 21.

The win moved Clayton to 16-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference.

Rams fall to C.B. Aycock: C.B. Aycock edged Cleveland in a pair of low-scoring basketball clashes on Tuesday. Aycock’s girls took a 33-26 win over the Rams as the two teams combined to score just four points in the opening quarter. Miranda Hinton led Cleveland with 10 points in the loss as the Rams fell to 2-5 in the conference race and 8-11 overall.

The Aycock boys’ team held Cleveland to just four fourth-quarter points to win a key Eastern Carolina 3A Conference boys contest, 40-38. The win moves Aycock to a third place tie at 4-3 in the conference, while Cleveland stands fifth at 3-4.

Bobby Stenborg paced the Rams with 14 points in the loss.

Harnett Central girls edge Clayton: Harnett Central held off a fourth-quarter comeback attempt from Clayton’s girls basketball team for a 42-40 Greater Neuse River 4A Conference win on Tuesday. The Comets scored 18 fourth-quarter points.

Tanisha Murphy had eight points to lead Clayton, which fell to 4-4 in the conference.
