Four Cleveland High standings earn player of the year honors

Hayes, Ireland, Martin and Burton earn player of the year awards

Four Cleveland High School standouts were recognized as the best in their respective sports by their fellow Eastern Carolina 3A Conference members for the fall sports season.

Jacob Burton was the boys soccer player of the year, Jarrett Hayes was the boys cross country runner of the year, Courtney Ireland was the volleyball player of the year and Isaac Martin was the offensive player of the year in football.

The conference also hands out team sportsmanship awards in every sport. Cleveland’s football and girls tennis teams were honored with those awards.

South Johnston boys cross country Joe Loia was named the coach of the year after leading the Trojans to the team conference championship.

Cleveland boys soccer coach Fabrizio Bonilla was coach of the year as well after leading the Rams to the league championship a season after they finished in the bottom of the conference standings.
