Greater Neuse conference honors top players and coaches

Four conference championships – the haul that Garner had during the fall Greater Neuse River 4A Conference season of athletic competition – brought home even more recognition for the Trojans with the announcement of the league’s all-conference awards.

After winning league titles in girls golf, volleyball, boys soccer and football, Garner athletes were named players of the year in all four sports. Three Trojan coaches were also named the best in their respective sports.

Garner swept the boys soccer individual awards after earning the conference championship. Marco Perez, who paced the Trojans with 31 points on eight goals and 15 assists, was the league offensive player of the year.

Garner goalkeeper Kenneth Perkinson was the defensive player of the year and John Sherwin was the coach of the year. The Trojans allowed just 0.8 goals per match.

Quarterback Vincent Jeffries of Garner was the league’s football player of the year. Jeffries led the Trojans to a 14-1 record, throwing for 2,280 yards on the season and 27 touchdowns.

Clayton defensive end Demage Bailey was the league’s defensive player of the year.

Retiring football coaches Nelson Smith of Garner and Gary Fowler of Clayton shared the Marquavious Johnson of Knightdale picked up offensive player of the year honors.

West Johnston swept cross country honors with Becky Meshaw and Jake Betancourt picking up the respective runner of the year awards, while Patrick Shaw was coach of the year in both boys and girls cross country after leading West to another repeat as conference champions.

Smithfield-Selma’s Elizabeth Carter and Allison Powers of West Johnston, who only lost to each other in GNRC singles play this season, were the girls tennis players of the year.

Linwood Stephenson of Smithfield-Selma was named coach of the year.

Garner’s Kristen Powell was the volleyball player of the year. She totaled 401 kills on the season and led the Trojans to another conference championship.

West Johnston coach Jerry Hogan, whose team finished second in the league, was the top coach.

The Trojans of Garner had both the girls golf player of the year in Nicole Ceyrolles and the coach of the year in Connie Barnes.

The league also handed out individual sportsmanship awards in each sport. Those winners are listed below, along with the all-conference teams.
