We all share a sense of sadness when fire or some other accidental situation causes a family to lose their home.
In Johnston County over the past month, as many as five families have been forced from their homes in the shadow of Christmas.
But Johnston County residents don’t generally sit by and watch from the sidelines.
And that’s why the Harold Dixon family was able to move into a new home just before Christmas.
The Dixon family lost their home just a week before Christmas and the community mobilized quickly, donating all manner of items from clothing and food to a new home. Yes, that’s right.
The Fred Smith Company donated the use of a home for several months rent free to allow the Dixon family time to figure out their next move.
As big a donation as that is, it’s important to note that it was one of many donations Johnston County residents made to this family.
We never like to see someone down on their luck. And, when that circumstance arises through no fault of their own, Johnston County folks have proven, time and again, that they have the capacity to help make it right.
The Dixon family’s Christmas will always be one they remember. Not only for the bad luck of a destructive fire, but for the kindness and graciousness of friends, neighbors and complete strangers.
