Comet girls move to 5-0
Clayton’s girls basketball team blew open a tight game with a stellar third-quarter defensive effort Friday night and topped Fuquay-Varina 57-37. The unbeaten Comets (5-0) outscored the Bengals 16-2 in the third quarter after leading just 26-22 at the half.
Vanessa Pitts led three Clayton players in double-figure scoring with 17 points. Taisha Murphy added 11 and Jenna Harris finished with 10. Jasmine Dixon (eight) and Ashley Murphy (seven) also aided the Comets’ scoring effort.
Gaskins paces Clayton boys to big win
Clayton held Fuquay-Varina’s boys basketball team to seven first-half points and rolled to a 71-38 road victory Friday night.
Anthony Gaskins led the Comets (5-0) with 20 points. Gary Clark had 18 points and 15 rebounds for Clayton despite not playing in the second half.
