Comets, Pirates split swim wins

Clayton and Corinth Holders split team wins in a season-opening swim meet. The Comets won in girls action 101-68. Corinth Holders took a 118-52 win on the boys’ side.

Winners for Clayton’s girls were Gina Joy in the 200-yard free and the 500, Katie Simpson in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly, Dominique Quintero in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 and 400 free relay teams.

Corinth Holders won in the 200 medley relay and picked up individual wins from Michaela Carter (100 free) and Amanda Knickerbocker (100 backstroke).

Second place finishes went to the Pirates’ Lauren Bunting (200 free), Stephanie Grandin (500 free and 100 breast) and the 400 relay team.

Corinth Holders boys swimmers broke seven school records in the meet: the 200 medley relay, 200 IM, 100 butterfly, 100 free, 200 free relay, 100 breast and 400 free relay.

Individual wins went to the Pirates’ 200 medley relay team of Connor Blandford, Cody Beamer, Nolan Hopkins and Bryce Sherrill, Hopkins in the 200 free and 100 fly, Blandford in the 200 IM and 10 free, Eric Svadeba in the 500, the 200 free relay team of Beamer, Neal Quinn, Chris Carter and Elliot Hunt, Quinn in the 100 backstroke, Beamer in the breaststroke and the 400 relay team of Sherrill, Svadeba, Hopkins and Blandford.

Clayton’s Brett Bailey won the 50 free.

Narron Family Baseball Clinic is Jan. 5

The Narron Family Free Baseball Clinic for Seventh Graders will be held on Jan. 5 in the Smithfield-Selma High gymnasium. Registration begins at 9 a.m.

The seventh grade marks the first year players can tryout for their school teams and is a divider between youth leagues and higher skill levels of amateur play.

The clinic offers skill instruction from an all-professional staff led by Richard “Rooster” Narron, a former all-American catcher at ECU; Johnny Narron, the current hitting coach for the Milwaukee Brewers; Jerry Narron, who is a bench coach for the Brewers, and several others.

Skill sessions will cover hitting, pitching, catching, base running, infield play and outfield play.

Other instructors include Clayton native and Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Chris Archer, Jerry Sands, an outfielder with the Boston Red Sox, Sam Narron, a pitching coach with the Washington Nationals organization, Connor Narron, an infielder in the Baltimore Orioles organization, Walker Gourley, a utility mane with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, and Rob Wooten, a pitcher with the Milwaukee Brewers organization.

Participating players should bring equipment, including indoor and outdoor shoes.
