Members representing Free Will Baptist churches in Johnston and Wake counties generated $54,571 in gifts for Mount Olive College, the denomination’s private, liberal arts institution, according to Rhonda Jessup, Mount Olive College spokeswoman.

Church members presented the money to the college at a dinner in October. Of those giving, 219 were designated as Bridge Builders for contributing a gift of $100 or more, according to Jessup.

“Even in times of distress and an unstable economy, the Original Free Will Baptist Church has been loyal in its support to Mount Olive College. Through the dinner program, the people feel that they are sharing in a meaningful way to help support the students we serve. We anticipate contributions totaling half million dollars from 16 area dinners held in eastern North Carolina this fall,” said Jean F. Ackiss, the school’s director of church support.

Mount Olive College is a private institution with a liberal arts tradition. The college, sponsored by the Convention of Original Free Will Baptists, has locations in Mount Olive, New Bern, Wilmington, Goldsboro, Research Triangle Park, Washington and Jacksonville.
