CLAYTON -- A team of cheerleaders is rallying to raise funds for a mother of one of the cheerleaders who has been diagnosed with stage four breast cancer.

Thirty four-year-old, Tabitha Fuchs, or “Tab” as she is called by her friends, is the mother of a eight-year-old, Ava, who tumbles and flies in stunts on the Premier Clayton Shockers cheerleading team. Tab also has a five-year-old son, Nolan, who can sometimes be spotted chasing hula-hoops around the gym while his sister practices. Tab was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in July 2011.

In Tab’s words, “There is no stage five.”

The team of girls, ages seven to nine, on the PCS cheerleading team has started fundraising to help Tab offset the costs of the frequent trips to Chapel Hill where Tab is undergoing clinical trials.

Leading up to a cheer and dance competition the team is a part of on November 18, PCS is selling T-shirts and wristbands to help raise funds. Cheerleaders and dancers in the competition will stand out from the other teams. They will be wearing Breast Cancer ribbons specially designed for this cause. A local real estate agent, Scott Lee Homes, donated funds for the ribbons so that everyone on the team could wear one.

“We are very thankful to them and would love to find other local businesses to partner with,” said one cheerleading mom Jennifer Myers.

This kind of fundraiser is a first for the team, Myers said. But she said the PCS cheerleaders are like a family, so they wanted to band together and support their fellow cheer mom however they could.

Fundraising for breast cancer is also a first for many of the young girls. This fundraiser has been an introduction for them of how to help others.

“It is an amazing thing to see children learn the meaning of friendship and fellowship,” Myers said.

The fundraiser will be ongoing. To donate to support Tab, visit the Facebook page “Cheer Moms for Tab.” Anyone who would like to give a donation can mail a check to KS Bank in Garner in the name of Tabitha Fuchs. The address for this bank is 920 7th Avenue Garner NC 27529.
