CLAYTON -- Police hunted down a suspect who fled into a wooded area behind the Riverwood subdivision during school hours Wednesday, but they chose not to advise the schools to go on lockdown or change their student release schedule.

“There was no request to lockdown any schools because the suspect was not armed or considered to be a danger to others at the time,” Clatyon police Chief Glen Allen said.

“Clayton PD and the schools were in regular contact as the situation unfolded, and the search did not necessitate altering any school schedules or activities.”

Franklin Huffman, 30, of 333 Woodson Drive, Clayton, was charged with failure to appear on worthless check offenses and probation violations.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office also served a domestic violence order against him when he was tracked down by K-9’s from the Wake County Sheriff’s Department later that afternoon.

Huffman fled on foot twice from officers trying to arrest him between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday. Huffman has been jailed in lieu of a $51,000 bond.

Johnston County Schools Public Information Officer Terri Sessoms said school officials had no reason to believe students were in any danger. “The police dept has assured us there is no danger for students and staff, so the schools are not under lockdown.”
