Workshops guide kids through college prep

The National Association of University Women recently sponsored a series of workshops at North Garner Middle School for children eighth through 12 grades. The parents and students who attended got information on what they needed to bridge the gap in higher education. NAUW representatives offered workshops on ways parents and their children could plan for college, college registration, the PSAT-SAT-ACT, Êhigh school/SPAM-8, writing tips for essays, and financial aid. Some of the attendees who benfited from the information in these orkshps incouded from the left, NAUW member Gladys McNeil and her grandson Malcolm Kent of Clayton. McNeil and Kent reviewed options with Geraldine Currie, Special Population Career Coordinator.

Clayton area families of school age children got help in bridging the information gap between parents and their children at a recent series of workshops, according to Juliene A. Allen. Allen is member of the Clayton chapter of the National Association of University Women.

NAUW invited 8th- through 12th-grade students and their parents to the workshops which were aimed at helping attendees understand how to plan for college. Allen said North Garner Middle School students who came to the workshops also earned extra school credits.

The information was provided to students and parents so that they could learn more about how to bridge the gaps between moving from middle school to high school and from high school to college. Some of the modules addressed financial aid for first time students as well as for people who wanted to go back to college or upgrade their skills.

NAUW representatives offered workshops on how to plan for college, college registration, the PSAT-SAT-ACT, high school/Student Parent Access Monitor system-8 (System students and parents use to register for classes.), writing tips for essays, and financial aid.
