Christin Cotten, is a graduate of Clayton High School, University of North Carolina and North Carolina Central University School of Law. She is member of the Navy JAG Corps and is preparing to move to Naples, Italy where she will begin her first tour of duty as an international attorney. The duration of her deployment is still to be determined.

Q: I read that you were a gifted student at Clayton High School both academically and athletically. What were your goals for your future while still in high school?

While in high school my goal was to perform the best that I could – to push myself both academically and athletically.

Q: Did you always intend to study at UNC? If not, what were some of your other options?

UNC was always on my list of schools that I would apply to for college. My family are big tarheel fans, so they were very excited about my decision to attend UNC-CH. Some of the other schools I applied to included, University of Maryland – College Park, East Carolina University, Hampton University, and UNCG.

Q: What was your undergraduate career like? Did you enjoy your studies? Did you feel prepared for the university experience? In what extracurricular activities did you participate?

I enjoyed my undergraduate experience tremendously. The public policy department and major offered a very challenging and rewarding experience. The public policy curriculum was very stimulating. In fact, I was a student representative in the Public Policy Major Union. Also, I was very involved with the student athlete activities in the UNC-CH athletic department. Those activities included Carolina Leadership Academy, CREED Mentoring Program, Get Active Gatorade School Outreach Program, and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Q: At what point did you decide on a career in law? Where did you earn your law degree?

I decided I wanted to be a lawyer in high school. North Carolina Central University School of Law is where I earned my law degree and MBA.

Q: Were you immediately interested in pursing a legal career in the Naval Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps, or did that come later?

I became interested in the Navy JAG Corps during my first year of law school. I was fortunate to meet Navy JAGs during informational interviews at the law school, as well as the National Black Law Students Association’s National Conference in 2008. The JAGs that I met were extremely motivated people and I respected their desire to serve their country while practicing law.

Q: What has transpired to pique your interest in international criminal defense?

The opportunity to travel is a major factor in my interest in international law.

Q: Could you tell me about the Italian studies that are in your future?

Recently, I began studying Italian through online courses. I hope that the language courses will help me transition to the country and culture quicker.

Q: What comes next for you? What are your short and long term goals?

I am focusing on my career right now, and making sure that I serve the Navy to the best of my ability.

Q: With your busy career do you have any time for hobbies? What do you like to do?

I love to attend plays, concerts, and gallery openings when I have some free time. Also, I like to be up to date on the latest movies in theatres, as well as watching classic movies at home.
