CORINTH HOLDERS -- Corinth Holders picked up its third victory of the season on Tuesday night, defeating Louisburg 33-29 in a Northern Carolina 2-A Conference game.

Last year’s Pirate squad won two games.

“This was a good win and will push us in the right direction going into the conference tournament,” said Pirates’ coach Brandy Smith, whose squad improved to 3-10 in the league and 3-19 overall.

The teams were tied 11-all after the first quarter, and the Warriors led 17-15 at the break. Much of Louisburg’s offense came from offensive rebounds.

“In the first half we gave up two many second-chance opportunities,” Smith said. “We weren’t making any contact in the paint or boxing out.”

Though Corinth Holders struggled in the first half – the Pirates missed a multitude of close shots – they went inside in the second half and came up with key baskets from Cyarra Pierson and Samantha Gibson as well as free throws from Holly Price, Pierson, Gibson and Kris Neal.

“Offensively, we never could get going,” Smith said. “We found out where we could get the ball but we missed a lot of easy chip shots around the basket. But we had a lot of high-low situations the whole game, so we kept going back to it.”

Defensively, Corinth did a better job in the second half of limiting the Warriors on the offensive end.“We made the adjustments and boxed out a lot better,” Smith said.

Price and Gibson finished with 10 points each for Corinth Holders, while Pierson and Neal chipped in with six and five points, respectively.

Alston and Alizia Johnson paced Louisburg with nine points each. Sedalia Seda added six.
