Several Johnston County residents made the dean’s list at N.C. A&T State University including Clayton residents, Sabenna A. Anderson, Ashley N. Bryant, Marcus L. Cater, Joshua I. Justice, Sean M. Kirby and Roderick D Mitchener.
North Greenville University has recognized Emily Lauren Elsey from Clayton for her academic accomplishments by naming her to the dean’s list for the fall semester.
Senior Vice President for Academic Programs Denise Rotondo announced that 471 undergraduate students have been named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester at Meredith College including eight local students.
Local students included Joy Jacquelyn Barnett, Kara Ruth Baughman, Taylor Layne Dorsey, Jennifer Denise Hill, Danielle Read, Keila Hanani Jaen all of Clayton along with Anna Gray Dougherty of Smithfield.
Six students from Johnston Community College received scholarships through the Golden LEAF Scholarship program for the North Carolina Community College System. JCC’s recipients are Elaine Ackerman and Melissa Dixon of Selma, Shamauh Samuelsson of Selma, Jessie Taylor of Smithfield and Nathan Turner of Clayton.
The Golden LEAF Scholarship program helps North Carolinians attend the state’s community colleges and is funded through a $750,000 grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation.
The scholarship can be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, transportation and childcare expenses related to attending classes during the academic year. Te be eligible a students demonstrate financial need and live in rural counties that are tobacco-dependent and/or economically distressed. Scholarships are available for both occupational and curriculum students and are awarded during the fall, spring and summer semesters.

Seventy-seven of Johnston County Public School’s counselors are participating in National School Counseling Week events Feb. 6–10.
Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association the week highlights the impact school counselors have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a productive future. School counselors are hosting special events and activities in to highlight how important the school-counseling program is to a child’s success.
ASCA is a worldwide nonprofit organization based in Alexandria, VA. This is the school counseling division of the American Counseling Association. They provides professional development, publications, resources, research, and advocacy to professional school counselors.
The special week events provides recognition for school counselors who “implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century,” according to Dr. Oliver Johnson, Executive Director for Student Services.
